Best Free CV Checkers in 2027: What Is Free and What Is Not
RoundupUpdated 12 min read
For a free check against a real job ad, start with Novorésumé's ATS checker, Jobscan's 5 free scans a month, or Resymetry, which is ours. Enhancv and SkillSyncer are good second opinions.
The one thing to watch: "free" often stops at the score. Before you upload, check whether you need an account, how often the free check comes back, and what the tool does with your CV.
How we chose and checked
We make Resymetry, so we ranked every tool by the same three questions, cited the page behind every claim, and said what each one does better than ours.
We started from the tools people find when they search for a free CV, resume or ATS checker. We kept the ones whose free check we could describe from their own public pages.
For each tool we read the product page, the pricing page and the privacy policy on 6 November 2026. We did not create accounts, sign in, or upload a CV to any tool except our own. So this list tells you what each company says its free check does, not how good its advice is.
We ranked them on three questions. How much can you check for free, and how often? Does the check use the job you are applying for? And how much do you give up to use it: an account, an email address, or a CV kept for an unclear time?
We left out Kickresume, because its ATS checker is a paid feature. We left out Rezi, because its pricing page only calls the free score "Limited". Zety's checker page did not load for us, so it is not here either.
The list: 9 picks
1. Novorésumé ATS Resume Checker
Best for: A free check against the job you want, without making an account first.
- What is free
- You upload a PDF or DOCX and paste the job description. The score covers five areas: format and structure, job match, content quality, section organisation and technical elements. The page says no sign-up is needed to see your score.
Source: Novorésumé ATS resume checker, read 6 November 2026
- Where free stops
- The full report is emailed if you sign up. The page also says AI tools give free users 2 uses a month, without saying plainly whether the checker counts toward that.
Source: Novorésumé ATS resume checker, read 6 November 2026
- Paid
- Premium is sold in 1-, 3- and 6-month plans with a 14-day refund window; the pricing page we read did not show the amounts.
Source: Novorésumé pricing, read 6 November 2026
Good
- It checks your CV against the job you paste, not against a general idea of a good CV.
Source: Novorésumé ATS resume checker, read 6 November 2026
- You see the score before you hand over an email address.
Source: Novorésumé ATS resume checker, read 6 November 2026
- Its privacy policy says its AI providers, Anthropic and OpenAI, do not train on your data.
Source: Novorésumé privacy policy (last modified 14 May 2025), read 6 November 2026
Not so good
- Data is kept for up to 6 years after you last use Novorésumé, and backups up to 190 days after you delete it.
Source: Novorésumé privacy policy (last modified 14 May 2025), read 6 November 2026
- How many free checks you get each month is not stated clearly.
Source: Novorésumé ATS resume checker, read 6 November 2026
Verdict: The most generous free start on this list: a job-specific score with no account. Read the retention period before you upload, because it is long. If you only need a score, this is the first one to try.
2. Jobscan
Best for: Scanning one CV against several job ads a month, inside a larger job-search suite.
- What is free
- A free account gets 5 scans a month. Each scan compares your resume with a job listing and gives a match rate, matching hard skills, soft skills and keywords.
Source: Jobscan: What do you get with Jobscan Premium?, read 6 November 2026; Jobscan home page, read 6 November 2026
- Where free stops
- You need an account: the free scan buttons lead to sign-up. After 5 scans you wait for next month or pay.
Source: Jobscan home page, read 6 November 2026; Jobscan: What do you get with Jobscan Premium?, read 6 November 2026
- Paid
- Premium is $49.95 a month, or $89.95 every three months with a 7-day free trial.
Source: Jobscan blog: Jobscan vs Jobright (30 July 2026), read 6 November 2026; Jobscan promos page (quarterly plan), read 6 November 2026
Good
- Five free scans that come back every month is more free checking than most tools here.
Source: Jobscan: What do you get with Jobscan Premium?, read 6 November 2026
- Every scan is against a specific job listing, which is the comparison that matters.
Source: Jobscan home page, read 6 November 2026
- If you need more, the same account has a builder, tracker and LinkedIn tools.
Source: Jobscan home page, read 6 November 2026
Not so good
- The paid plan is the most expensive subscription on this list.
Source: Jobscan blog: Jobscan vs Jobright (30 July 2026), read 6 November 2026; Jobscan promos page (quarterly plan), read 6 November 2026
- Its own home page says measurable results are not part of the match rate, so a high rate can hide a CV with no evidence of impact.
Source: Jobscan home page, read 6 November 2026
Verdict: The best-known job-matching scanner, and its free tier is real and recurring. Use the 5 scans on the jobs you care about most. Only pay if you are tailoring for many roles every week.
3. ResymetryOurs
Best for: Seeing exactly which lines of your CV help or hurt for one job, with no account.
- What is free
- Upload a PDF or DOCX up to 5 MB and name a target role, paste a job description, or both. You get an overall score (ATS readability, skills, experience, job match, seniority) and the main strengths and issues. Each finding quotes the line of your CV it is about.
Source: Resymetry, read 6 November 2026
- Where free stops
- One free check per browser every 3 days. The full report is paid.
Source: Resymetry, read 6 November 2026; Resymetry pricing, read 6 November 2026
- Paid
- The full report is $2.99 once per report, with no subscription.
Source: Resymetry pricing, read 6 November 2026
Good
- No account and no email address, before or after the result.
Source: Resymetry, read 6 November 2026
- Findings quote your own words, so you can see what each one is about.
Source: Resymetry, read 6 November 2026
- The CV file is stored encrypted and deleted with the result after 30 days, and is not used for training.
Source: Resymetry privacy policy, read 6 November 2026
Not so good
- One free check every 3 days is less than Jobscan's 5 a month or SkillSyncer's 2 a week.
Source: Resymetry, read 6 November 2026; Jobscan: What do you get with Jobscan Premium?, read 6 November 2026; SkillSyncer pricing, read 6 November 2026
- It never writes bullets or rewrites your CV, and has no builder or job tracker. If you want new wording, other tools here will draft it.
Source: Resymetry, read 6 November 2026
Verdict: Ours, so weigh this line accordingly. It is built for the few applications that matter: one CV, one job, findings you can check against your own words. The score describes how well the CV matches the job, not whether you will be hired.
4. Enhancv Resume Checker
Best for: A wide free check of content, layout, grammar and keywords.
- What is free
- The free checker runs 27 checks across seven categories on a PDF or DOCX up to 2 MB. It can also check against a job description if you give one.
Source: Enhancv resume checker, read 6 November 2026
- Where free stops
- A paid version goes deeper, into how a person would read the resume. The checker page does not say whether you need an account, or whether the job-description part is free.
Source: Enhancv resume checker, read 6 November 2026
- Paid
- Enhancv Pro is $39 a month, $69 every three months, or $99 every six months.
Source: Enhancv blog: best resume builders (updated 2 November 2026), read 6 November 2026
Good
- 27 checks is a broad first pass, covering grammar and layout as well as keywords.
Source: Enhancv resume checker, read 6 November 2026
- The checker page says it never shares your data with third parties or uses it to train AI models.
Source: Enhancv resume checker, read 6 November 2026
Not so good
- Its privacy policy keeps your data as long as you have an account, so delete the account when you are done.
Source: Enhancv privacy policy (updated 23 July 2024), read 6 November 2026
- Enhancv's free builder plan lasts 7 days, so the upsell after the check is a subscription.
Source: Enhancv pricing, read 6 November 2026
Verdict: A thorough free check, especially for spelling and layout problems a keyword scanner misses. Add the job description so the result is about one job. Expect to be offered the builder afterwards.
5. SkillSyncer
Best for: Free keyword scans that come back every week.
- What is free
- The free plan gives 2 job match scans a week and 10 AI credits a week, with no card. A scan shows the keywords from the posting that your resume is missing, a match score and formatting checks.
Source: SkillSyncer pricing, read 6 November 2026; SkillSyncer home page, read 6 November 2026
- Where free stops
- You need to sign up. After 2 scans you wait for next week or pay.
Source: SkillSyncer pricing, read 6 November 2026
- Paid
- Premium is $14.95 a month, or $34.86 every three months.
Source: SkillSyncer pricing, read 6 November 2026
Good
- Two free scans a week adds up to more than any other free tier here.
Source: SkillSyncer pricing, read 6 November 2026
- Issues are marked on the bullet they belong to, which makes editing fast.
Source: SkillSyncer home page, read 6 November 2026
- If you do pay, unlimited scans are cheap.
Source: SkillSyncer pricing, read 6 November 2026
Not so good
- Its privacy policy gives no retention period, and deleting your account means emailing support.
Source: SkillSyncer privacy policy (updated 1 October 2026), read 6 November 2026
- A missing keyword is not the same as missing experience; it shows which words are absent, not whether your experience proves the skill.
Source: SkillSyncer home page, read 6 November 2026
Verdict: The best free option if you scan many postings, as long as you are happy to sign up. It is strongest on keywords. Read its privacy policy, because it says little about how long resumes are kept.
6. Resume Worded
Best for: Unlimited free general feedback on how a CV is written.
- What is free
- Your overall CV score is free, with unlimited uploads. The review scores Impact, Brevity, Style and Soft Skills, and includes a look at hard skills.
Source: Resume Worded CV checker, read 6 November 2026
- Where free stops
- You must create a free account and confirm your email first. The main checker compares your CV with similar CVs in your industry, not with a job; matching a job description is a separate tool.
Source: Resume Worded CV checker, read 6 November 2026; Resume Worded ATS resume scanner, read 6 November 2026
- Paid
- A Pro tier unlocks more, but the pages we read did not state its price.
Source: Resume Worded home page, read 6 November 2026; Resume Worded CV checker, read 6 November 2026
Good
- Unlimited free uploads, so you can re-check after every edit.
Source: Resume Worded CV checker, read 6 November 2026
- The feedback is about writing quality, such as impact and brevity, not only keywords.
Source: Resume Worded CV checker, read 6 November 2026
- Its privacy policy says you can ask for deletion and it will happen within 48 hours, and that its AI providers are bound not to train on your data.
Source: Resume Worded privacy policy (updated 15 February 2025), read 6 November 2026
Not so good
- No account, no check.
Source: Resume Worded CV checker, read 6 November 2026
- The free check is general, so it cannot tell you what a particular job asks for.
Source: Resume Worded CV checker, read 6 November 2026
Verdict: Good for improving how your bullet points read, with as many re-checks as you like. It is not a job match. Pair it with a job-specific check before you apply.
7. Teal
Best for: People who also want a free builder and job tracker.
- What is free
- The free tier includes basic resume analysis, the top 5 keywords from a job description, unlimited resumes and job tracking, and a few AI credits. No card is needed.
Source: Teal pricing, read 6 November 2026
- Where free stops
- You need an account, and the free keyword match stops at the top 5 keywords.
Source: Teal pricing, read 6 November 2026
- Paid
- Teal+ is $13 every 7 days, $29 every 30 days, or $79 every 90 days.
Source: Teal pricing, read 6 November 2026
Good
- The free tier is a full workspace: unlimited resumes and job tracking.
Source: Teal pricing, read 6 November 2026
- A 7-day paid plan is cheap if you only need a short burst of tailoring.
Source: Teal pricing, read 6 November 2026
Not so good
- As a checker, the free part is thin: 5 keywords and a basic analysis.
Source: Teal pricing, read 6 November 2026
Verdict: Teal is a builder and tracker first, and the free check is a small part of it. Choose it if you want somewhere to keep every tailored version. For a deeper free check, use another tool here.
8. ChatGPT (or another AI assistant)
Best for: A quick second opinion you can question, and draft wording you will edit yourself.
- What is free
- The free plan has unlimited text chats, subject to abuse guardrails, and a limited number of messages with uploads. You can paste your CV and a job ad and ask how well they match.
Source: ChatGPT pricing, read 6 November 2026
- Where free stops
- Uploads are limited on the free plan. There is no fixed method, so the same question can get a different answer in a new chat.
Source: ChatGPT pricing, read 6 November 2026
- Paid
- Paid Go, Plus and Pro plans add more use.
Source: ChatGPT pricing, read 6 November 2026
Good
- You can push back, ask why, and ask for another version.
Our description of using it, not a quote from the company.
- It will draft new bullet points, which several tools here will not.
Our description of using it, not a quote from the company.
Not so good
- Any line it quotes from your CV is not checked against the file, so check quotes yourself.
Our description of using it, not a quote from the company.
- Asked to improve a CV, it can write achievements you do not have. Keep only what is true.
Our description of using it, not a quote from the company.
Verdict: Fine for a first read, and good for talking through a gap. It is not a measurement: scores move between chats. Check your data settings before pasting a CV, and never send claims you cannot back up.
9. TopResume free review
Best for: A written review from a resume-writing service, if you can wait two days.
- What is free
- You upload your resume and get an email with a link to a written breakdown, normally in about 48 hours. The page says a specialist team writes the feedback, and it includes an ATS check.
Source: TopResume free resume review, read 6 November 2026
- Where free stops
- It is not instant, it does not mention comparing against a job description, and it leads to paid resume-writing packages.
Source: TopResume free resume review, read 6 November 2026
- Paid
- Resume-writing packages are sold separately; the review page did not state their price.
Source: TopResume free resume review, read 6 November 2026
Good
- A written review rather than only a number.
Source: TopResume free resume review, read 6 November 2026
Not so good
- Its privacy policy lists, for the US and UK, selling personal data to third parties for advertising and data enrichment, including resumes passed on by partners to data brokers.
Source: TopResume privacy policy (updated 15 July 2025), read 6 November 2026
- The review is general, not about a specific job.
Source: TopResume free resume review, read 6 November 2026
Verdict: Useful if you want words rather than a score and are not in a hurry. Treat it as the first step of a sales process. Read its privacy policy before you upload.
What a free CV checker can and can't tell you
A checker is good at mechanical problems. It can tell you if software struggles to read your file. It can list words from the job ad that your CV never uses. It can flag missing sections, odd headings and dates in strange formats.
It cannot see the employer's own hiring software or how it is set up. It cannot know who else applied. So no score tells you whether you will be shortlisted. Treat it as a list of things to check, not a verdict.
Scores from different tools are not comparable. Each tool uses its own rules, so 70 in one tool and 85 in another can describe the same CV. Compare a tool only with itself, before and after you edit.
If a checker says your layout is the problem, the fix is usually a simpler document. Plain, single-column Word templates are free on our templates page.
How to tell if a "free" checker is really free
Most checkers are free up to a point. The point is what matters. Ask these questions before you upload.
- Can I see the score before giving an email address or making an account?
- Do I see the actual problems, or only a number with the details locked?
- Does the free check come back each week or month, or is it a trial that ends?
- If there is a trial, does it turn into a subscription unless I cancel?
- Is the "result" emailed to me? Then my email is part of the price.
- After the check, what is it trying to sell me: a report, a builder, or a writing service?
Check against one job, not in general
A general check compares your CV with an idea of a good CV. That catches typos and layout problems. It cannot tell you that the job wants Kubernetes and your CV never shows it.
Paste the full job ad, including the requirements and the "nice to have" list. Run the check once per job you really want. A CV that matches one ad well can match the next one badly.
Then look at evidence, not just words. Listing a skill is not the same as showing you used it. If the job asks for something you have done, make sure a line of your CV says where and how.
Your CV is personal data: what to check before uploading
A CV holds your name, contact details, work history and often your address. Upload it only after you know what happens to it. The privacy policies we read differ a lot.
Search the policy for these words: "retain", "delete", "train" and "sell". If you cannot find an answer, assume the answer is not in your favour.
- How long is my CV kept? Look for a number of days, not "as long as necessary".
- Can I delete it myself, or do I have to email someone?
- Is it used to train AI models, by the company or its AI provider?
- Can it be sold or shared with advertisers or data brokers? Is there an opt-out?
- Does it stay after I close my account, for example in backups?
- Remove your street address and date of birth before uploading. A checker does not need them.

Questions people ask
Is there a completely free resume checker?
Several give you a real result for free. Novorésumé shows a job-specific score with no sign-up, Resume Worded gives unlimited general scores with a free account, and ChatGPT's free plan can read a CV in a chat. Most still stop somewhere: an account, a monthly limit, or a paid full report.
Source: Novorésumé ATS resume checker, read 6 November 2026; Resume Worded CV checker, read 6 November 2026; ChatGPT pricing, read 6 November 2026
Are ATS checkers accurate?
They are useful for finding concrete problems, like missing keywords or a layout software cannot read. They cannot see the employer's own hiring software or its settings, so no score tells you whether you will be shortlisted. Different tools also use different rules, so compare a tool only with itself.
Is Jobscan free?
Partly. A free account gets 5 scans a month. Unlimited scans need Premium, at $49.95 a month or $89.95 every three months.
Source: Jobscan: What do you get with Jobscan Premium?, read 6 November 2026; Jobscan blog: Jobscan vs Jobright (30 July 2026), read 6 November 2026; Jobscan promos page (quarterly plan), read 6 November 2026
Can ChatGPT check my CV?
Yes. Its free plan lets you paste a CV and a job ad and ask how well they match, with limited uploads. Treat the answer as a first read: check any line it quotes, and do not copy any achievement you cannot back up.
Source: ChatGPT pricing, read 6 November 2026
What is a good resume match score?
It depends on the tool, because each uses its own scale. Jobscan, for example, suggests aiming for a 75% match rate on its own scanner. Use a score to compare your edits, not to compare tools.
Source: Jobscan home page, read 6 November 2026
Is the Kickresume ATS checker free?
Not for most people. Kickresume's pricing page lists the ATS Resume Checker as a Premium feature, and the checker page says it is free for verified students and teachers. It compares your resume with successful resumes in its database, not with a job ad.
Source: Kickresume pricing, read 6 November 2026; Kickresume ATS resume checker, read 6 November 2026
Is it safe to upload my CV to a free checker?
It depends on the tool, so read its privacy policy for how long it keeps your CV, whether it trains AI on it, and whether it sells data. Policies differ a lot: Novorésumé says its AI providers do not train on your data, while TopResume's policy lists selling personal data to third parties in the US and UK. Resymetry deletes the file and result after 30 days.
