Best Free CV Templates in 2027 (ATS-Friendly, No Sign-Up)
RoundupUpdated 11 min read
Two sources give you a free Word CV template with no account, no email and no paywall: Resymetry's 14 templates and Harvard's resume templates. Both use one column of real text, which hiring software (an ATS, or applicant tracking system) reads most reliably.
If you write in Google Docs or LaTeX, there are good free options too. The CV builders further down are free to try, but check what the free download actually gives you before you write your whole CV in one.
How we chose and checked
Resymetry's templates are ours, so we judged every source, ours included, on the same four questions: what is free, whether you need an account, whether a paywall or watermark appears at download, and what the layout looks like.
On 6 November 2026 we read each source's public pages: template galleries, pricing pages and help pages. We did not create accounts or sign in anywhere, so we did not test any builder's download.
Where a template was offered as a direct file with no sign-up, we downloaded it and opened it to look at the layout. That covers Harvard's bullet-point Word template and the source of Jake's Resume. Those findings are marked as our own observation.
We judged layout by what you can see: one column or several, real text or images, standard headings, and whether contact details sit in the page body or in a header. That is a reading of the layout, not a test against any particular hiring system.
We ranked by how much you get with no account and no payment, then by how safe the layout looks for hiring software.
The list: 10 picks
1. Resymetry free ATS CV templatesOurs
Best for: Anyone who wants a plain Word CV laid out for their role, with nothing to sign up for.
- What is free
- 14 Word (.docx) templates, free to download with no email and no account: a general reverse-chronological layout, a shorter Professional layout, and role layouts from Graduate to Executive.
Source: Resymetry free ATS CV templates, read 6 November 2026
- Where free stops
- Word only, in English. There is no Google Docs, PDF or LaTeX version, and no colour or design options.
Source: Resymetry free ATS CV templates, read 6 November 2026
- Paid
- The templates are free; the optional full CV report is $2.99 one-time, with no subscription.
Source: Resymetry, read 6 November 2026
Good
- One column, standard headings, contact details in the body, and no tables, text boxes or images.
Source: Resymetry free ATS CV templates, read 6 November 2026
- We ran each file through Resymetry's own CV parsing before listing it, and re-run it when a file changes.
Our description of using it, not a quote from the company.
- Each role template comes with short do's and don'ts on the page, so no advice text is left inside your CV.
Source: Resymetry free ATS CV templates, read 6 November 2026
Not so good
- They look plain on purpose. If you want visual design, this is the wrong place.
Source: Resymetry free ATS CV templates, read 6 November 2026
- We made them and we checked them with our own tool, so weigh that check accordingly.
Our description of using it, not a quote from the company.
Verdict: The widest choice of role-specific Word templates you can download with no account. They are deliberately plain. Ranked first because they meet every test we set, not because they are ours; Harvard's meet the same tests.
2. Harvard Career Services resume templates
Best for: Students and graduates, especially in the US, who want a trusted one-page layout.
- What is free
- A bullet-point and a paragraph resume template in Word (.docx), each with an accessible Word version. The bullet-point one also comes as a Google Docs copy.
Source: Harvard Career Services: Create a resume, CV or cover letter, read 6 November 2026; Harvard Career Services: Bullet-point resume template, read 6 November 2026
- Where free stops
- It is written for Harvard students. The sample lines name Harvard, a campus address and a high school, so you must replace or delete them.

Good
- The Word file downloads from a direct link, with no account and no email.
Source: Harvard Career Services: Bullet-point resume template, read 6 November 2026
- In the bullet-point Word file, the name and contact line sit in the page body. There are no tables, text boxes or images, and dates are aligned with tab stops.
Source: Harvard Career Services: Bullet-point resume template, read 6 November 2026
- Accessible Word versions are offered alongside the standard ones.
Source: Harvard Career Services: Create a resume, CV or cover letter, read 6 November 2026
Not so good
- Only two layouts, both shaped for a US college resume rather than a mid-career CV.
Source: Harvard Career Services: Create a resume, CV or cover letter, read 6 November 2026
- The Google Docs version opens as a copy in Google Docs, which needs a Google account.
Source: Harvard Career Services: Bullet-point resume template, read 6 November 2026; Google Docs Editors Help: Use templates, read 6 November 2026
Verdict: A clean, honest template from a careers office with nothing to sell. Best if you are early in your career. Delete the Harvard-specific lines before you send it.
3. Microsoft Word resume templates
Best for: People who already write in Word and want lots of choice.
- What is free
- A large gallery of resume templates that Microsoft describes as free Word templates to download and customise. You can save, print and share them as PDF.
Source: Microsoft Word: Free resume templates, read 6 November 2026
- Where free stops
- Editing starts in Word for the web. The page shows a Sign in link but does not say whether you need a Microsoft account.
Source: Microsoft Word: Free resume templates, read 6 November 2026
Good
- Real Word files, so the text stays editable and selectable.
Source: Microsoft Word: Free resume templates, read 6 November 2026
- A wide range, including a template named "ATS office manager resume" alongside role-specific ones like nursing and attorney.
Source: Microsoft Word: Free resume templates, read 6 November 2026
Not so good
- Layouts vary a lot, from plain to bold and "modern" designs, so each one needs checking for columns and text boxes.
Source: Microsoft Word: Free resume templates, read 6 November 2026
- We did not open any of these files, because editing starts in Word for the web.
Our description of using it, not a quote from the company.
Verdict: Plenty of free Word templates, and some plain ones among them. Pick a one-column layout and check it before you use it. The account question is not answered on the page.
4. Google Docs resume templates
Best for: People who write in Google Docs and want to stay there.
- What is free
- Google Docs has a template gallery you open from File, then New, then From template. It includes resume templates.
Source: Google Docs Editors Help: Use templates, read 6 November 2026
- Where free stops
- You need to be signed in to Google Docs, and some template features are only for work or school accounts.
Source: Google Docs Editors Help: Use templates, read 6 November 2026
Good
- Built into a tool many people already use, with nothing extra to install.
Source: Google Docs Editors Help: Use templates, read 6 November 2026
- No paywall or watermark is mentioned for templates.
Source: Google Docs Editors Help: Use templates, read 6 November 2026
Not so good
- We did not open the templates, because that needs a Google account. Check the layout yourself.
Our description of using it, not a quote from the company.
Verdict: Free and convenient if you already have a Google account. Choose the plainest layout, and check that no text sits in a sidebar.
5. Jake's Resume (LaTeX)
Best for: Engineers and students who are comfortable editing LaTeX.
- What is free
- A LaTeX resume template under the MIT License. The source is public on GitHub and is also published as an Overleaf template.
Source: jakegut/resume on GitHub, read 6 November 2026; Overleaf: Jake's Resume template, read 6 November 2026
- Where free stops
- You need LaTeX on your computer or an Overleaf project. The GitHub repo was archived in August 2024, and the README marks the Overleaf copy "Not updated".
Source: jakegut/resume on GitHub, read 6 November 2026; Overleaf documentation: Your first project, read 6 November 2026
Good
- One column with plain headings: Education, Experience, Projects and Technical Skills.
Source: jakegut/resume on GitHub, read 6 November 2026
- The source turns on a setting that maps PDF text to real characters, with a comment saying it is there to keep the PDF machine-readable.
Source: jakegut/resume on GitHub, read 6 November 2026
- You can read the whole source without an account, and the license lets you reuse it.
Source: jakegut/resume on GitHub, read 6 November 2026; Overleaf: Jake's Resume template, read 6 November 2026
Not so good
- Editing LaTeX source is harder than editing a Word file, and a small typo can stop the PDF from building.
Our description of using it, not a quote from the company.
- Title and date lines are placed with LaTeX table commands, and the page is US Letter. Copy the text out of your PDF to check the order survives.
Source: jakegut/resume on GitHub, read 6 November 2026
Verdict: A popular, plain LaTeX layout with a sensible text setting. Great if you already use LaTeX. Not worth learning LaTeX for.
6. UK government CV builder (DWP)
Best for: UK job seekers who want a guided CV with no account.
- What is free
- A free CV builder from the Department for Work and Pensions. You can create and download a CV without an account.
Source: GOV.UK Find a job: Create a CV, read 6 November 2026; National Careers Service: CV sections, read 6 November 2026
- Where free stops
- It is a builder, not a template file. You need an account to upload, save or keep editing a CV, and the page does not say which file format you get.
Source: GOV.UK Find a job: Create a CV, read 6 November 2026
Good
- A government service, described as free, with no account needed to create and download.
Source: GOV.UK Find a job: Create a CV, read 6 November 2026
- The National Careers Service points to it from its own CV advice.
Source: National Careers Service: CV sections, read 6 November 2026
Not so good

Source: GOV.UK Find a job: Create a CV, read 6 November 2026
- Without an account you cannot come back and edit later.
Source: GOV.UK Find a job: Create a CV, read 6 November 2026
Verdict: The best no-account option for UK job seekers who would rather be guided than fill in a file. Finish it in one sitting, or make an account to save it.
7. Overleaf CV template gallery
Best for: Academics and researchers who want a LaTeX CV with publications.
- What is free
- A gallery of LaTeX CV and résumé templates, such as Minimal Academic CV and AltaCV. Overleaf's free plan has unlimited projects.

- Paid
- Paid plans run from $13 a month (Student) to $45 a month (Pro), with cheaper yearly billing.

Good
- Academic CV layouts that are hard to find elsewhere.
Source: Overleaf: CV and résumé templates, read 6 November 2026
- Many templates to start from, with the free plan enough for a single CV.
Source: Overleaf: CV and résumé templates, read 6 November 2026; Overleaf: Plans and pricing, read 6 November 2026
Not so good
- The gallery mixes plain and designed layouts. Check for sidebars and columns before you choose.
Source: Overleaf: CV and résumé templates, read 6 November 2026
- You need an Overleaf account and some LaTeX to use it.
Source: Overleaf documentation: Your first project, read 6 November 2026
Verdict: The right place for a long academic CV in LaTeX. For a one-page industry CV, Jake's Resume is the simpler start.
8. Kickresume
Best for: People who want a guided builder and are happy to make an account.
- What is free
- With a free account you get 4 resume templates, 4 matching cover letters and unlimited downloads.
Source: Kickresume: Pricing, read 6 November 2026; Kickresume: Resume templates, read 6 November 2026
- Where free stops
- You must create an account. The pages we read did not say which file format you can download or whether free downloads carry a watermark.
Source: Kickresume: Resume templates, read 6 November 2026; Kickresume: Pricing, read 6 November 2026
- Paid
- Premium costs €24 a month, or €96 paid once a year.
Source: Kickresume: Pricing, read 6 November 2026
Good
- The free plan says you can download your resume as many times as you want.
Source: Kickresume: Pricing, read 6 November 2026
- Kickresume says all its templates are optimised for ATS software. That is its own claim, not a test we ran.

Not so good
- Only 4 of its 40 templates are free.
Source: Kickresume: Pricing, read 6 November 2026
- Download format and watermark are not stated on the public pages.

9. Novorésumé
Best for: A quick one-page PDF when you don't mind a small brand mark.
- What is free
- A free Basic plan that does not expire: one page per document, two documents, 8 templates, and a formatted PDF download. No credit card is needed.
Source: Novorésumé: Pricing, read 6 November 2026
- Where free stops
- The free PDF carries Novoresume branding, and documents are limited to one page.
Source: Novorésumé: Pricing, read 6 November 2026
- Paid
- Pro is sold for 1, 3 or 6 months; the pricing page text we read did not show the amounts.
Source: Novorésumé: Pricing, read 6 November 2026
Good
- A real PDF download on the free plan, with no time limit.
Source: Novorésumé: Pricing, read 6 November 2026
- Novorésumé says its templates are ATS-friendly. That is its own claim, not a test we ran.
Source: Novorésumé: Resume templates, read 6 November 2026
Not so good
- Branding on the free PDF, which some readers will notice.
Source: Novorésumé: Pricing, read 6 November 2026
- No Word download is mentioned, so you cannot easily edit the file elsewhere.
Source: Novorésumé: Pricing, read 6 November 2026
Verdict: Free in a real sense, but with branding and a one-page cap. Fine for a short CV; less so for a senior one.
10. Resume.io
Best for: Trying a builder before deciding to pay for it.
- What is free
- The free plan lets you make one resume and one cover letter, but downloads are plain text (TXT) only.
Source: Resume.io: Pricing, read 6 November 2026
- Where free stops
- A PDF download needs a paid plan.
Source: Resume.io: Pricing, read 6 November 2026
- Paid
- A 7-day trial costs $2.95 and then renews at $29.95 every 4 weeks unless you cancel.
Source: Resume.io: Pricing, read 6 November 2026
Good
- You can build and see your resume before paying anything.
Source: Resume.io: Pricing, read 6 November 2026
- Paid plans include unlimited PDF downloads and a 7-day money-back guarantee.
Source: Resume.io: Pricing, read 6 November 2026
Not so good
- No free PDF or Word file, so it is not a free template in practice.
Source: Resume.io: Pricing, read 6 November 2026
- The trial renews automatically at a much higher price.
Source: Resume.io: Pricing, read 6 November 2026
Verdict: Included because it ranks for "free" searches, and you should know the catch. The free plan gives you a text file, not a usable CV. Set a reminder if you start the trial.
What makes a template ATS-friendly (and what breaks it)
Hiring software turns your CV into plain text before anyone reads it. A template is ATS-friendly when that text comes out complete and in the right order.
Most problems come from layout tricks that look fine on screen. Software reads the file, not the picture of the page.
- One column, top to bottom. Two columns can be read across, mixing a job title with a skill from the sidebar.
- Contact details in the page body. Some systems skip the Word header and footer.
- Standard headings: Summary, Experience, Education, Skills. Creative headings make sections harder to recognise.
- Real text, not text boxes, images, icons or skill bars. Text inside shapes and pictures can come out empty.
- No tables for the main content. Cells can be read in an unexpected order.
- One date format for every job, so your timeline reads consistently.
Two-column and design templates: when they're fine
Designed templates are not wrong. They are a risk only when software reads them first.
If you are handing a CV to a person, emailing a hiring manager directly, or applying for a design role with a portfolio, a designed layout can work well.
If you are applying through an online form, use one column. Keep the design for your portfolio, where it can be seen.
CV vs resume: which template for US, UK and EU
In the US, a resume is usually one page early in a career and two at most later. A US "CV" usually means a long academic record.
In the UK and Ireland, a CV is the normal job document, usually two pages. Leave off your photo, date of birth and marital status.
In parts of continental Europe, a photo and personal details are still common. Follow the custom of the country, and the instructions in the job ad, before any template.
The layout rules for hiring software are the same everywhere. Only the length and the personal details change.
Before you send it: check the template didn't break
A clean template can still go wrong once you fill it in. A pasted table, a text box or a moved contact line is enough.
Two quick checks help. Save your CV as PDF, select all the text and paste it into a plain text editor. If anything is missing or out of order, software may read it the same way.
You can also run the finished CV through Resymetry's free check against the job you want. It shows the free score and the main issues it finds, including layout problems. The full report is $2.99 one-time if you want the detail.
Why some well-known names are not on this list
Canva's pages refused our automated reading, and Zety's pages did not load in time. We do not rate tools we could not read.
MIT's careers office does not offer a template at all. It advises starting from a blank page and using its sample resumes instead.
The UK National Careers Service does not offer a template file either. Its CV advice links to the government CV builder listed above.

Questions people ask
Is there a truly free CV template with no sign-up?
Yes. Resymetry's 14 Word templates and Harvard's Word resume templates download directly, with no account or email. Both are free with no paywall or watermark.
Source: Resymetry free ATS CV templates, read 6 November 2026; Harvard Career Services: Bullet-point resume template, read 6 November 2026
Are Canva CV templates ATS-friendly?
We could not read Canva's pages, so we make no claim about specific templates. Many design templates use columns, icons and shapes, which software can read out of order. If you use one, pick a single-column layout and test the PDF by copying its text out.
Is a Word or PDF CV better?
Send whatever the job ad asks for. If it does not say, a PDF saved from a plain Word file keeps your layout and its text stays readable. Avoid a PDF that is a scan or a picture of a page.
Does Google Docs have free CV templates?
Yes. In Google Docs, choose File, then New, then From template, and look for the resume templates. You need to be signed in to a Google account.
Source: Google Docs Editors Help: Use templates, read 6 November 2026
Can I download a free PDF from CV builders?
It depends on the builder. Novorésumé's free plan gives a one-page PDF with its branding; Resume.io's free plan downloads plain text only.
Source: Novorésumé: Pricing, read 6 November 2026; Resume.io: Pricing, read 6 November 2026
Does an "ATS-friendly" label mean the template is safe?
Not on its own. Builders such as Kickresume and Novorésumé describe their templates as ATS-friendly, but that is their own claim. Check the layout yourself: one column, real text, standard headings.
Source: Kickresume: Resume templates, read 6 November 2026; Novorésumé: Resume templates, read 6 November 2026
Do I need a template at all?
No. MIT's careers office advises starting from a blank page, because templates get harder to edit over time. A template helps most when you want a ready, tested layout.
